Acts of Resistance – Bristol Old Vic REVIEW

Acts of Resistance is a passionate and straight talking community play, with a powerful message and a more powerful cast.

The play is created by four communities across England, run by theatres Bristol Old Vic, New Perspectives, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Brewery Arts Centre. Written by the award-winning Stef Smith.

For the Bristol Old Vic element Headlong Futures associate director Julia Head has been working with a group of 23 young people from the Lockleaze estate.

They have created a locally based piece centred around their own unique stories, examining the questions and the contradictions that seemed most important to their immediate lives.

The production follows four different story lines which they cut between to create a well paced production.

They managed to represent various ages, social classes and walks of life with a group of older people in the pub, school kids discovering their career paths, fishermen stranded at sea and a family around a dinner table.

Not to be biased… but I feel that the Bristol story was the strongest. Young school girl Mercy (pictured above) was brilliantly played and was a passionate driving force in her group of friends. A truly inspiring character as well as fantastic young actress.

This unique community play managed to put across clear messages from each community, and that I think considers this production a success.
